MSSH is certified to treat trauma patients with severe head injuries. A vast majority of the patients are from southern and eastern parts of Tamil Nadu. The Trauma Center team provides 24-hour coverage for trauma and emergency surgery cases. The presence of neurosurgeons, along with excellent multidisciplinary collaboration with specialists in Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and many other services, provides ideal management and treatment options for trauma patients. It takes a whole team of surgeons, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains, respiratory therapists, and others to help patients get back to normal life.
The Department of Neurosurgery, MSSH offers comprehensive treatment for:
Achievements:
In a relentless pursuit of excellence, our Neurosurgery department break new ground in the realm of minimally invasive brain and spine surgery. Through the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM), Intraoperative Angiography, Intraoperative Neuronavigation, Operating Microscope and Endoscopes, we have not only expanded the scope of neurosurgical procedures but also elevated safety standards to unprecedented levels.
The past year has been marked by significant milestones that commitment to innovation and superior patient care
Active participation in stroke management, particularly in acute ischemic stroke cases, led to the successful completion of 21 mechanical thrombectomies, with outcomes that rival those reported in Western literature. These achievements were showcased at the Tamil Nadu Innovations in Functional
Neurological Surgeons Annual Congress (TANS 2024), solidifying our position at the forefront of neurosurgical advancements.
We have expanded our expertise to include functional and epilepsy surgeries, such as Vagal Nerve Stimulation and lesionectomy for cortical dysplasia under Neuronavigation guidance, providing comprehensive care for patients with epilepsy related disorders.
Our commitment to excellence extends to pediatric patients with pathologies. Our dedicated team ensures comprehensive care for young patients, addressing their unique needs with compassion and expertise.
Furthermore, our team’s contributions to the global neurosurgical recognized on multiple fronts
Our Head of Department, Dr. Selvamuthukumaran, has shared insights and expertise at prestigious conferences worldwide, including the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies annual congress in Cape Town, South Africa, where he gave a talk about “Endoscopic management of CFS rhinorrhoea”, was invited to give a lecture about “Future Advances in Head Injury” CME organized by Tamil Nadu MGR University in Chennai and also about “Endoscopic Management of Intracerebral Hemorrhage” in TANS congress at Salem.
Our consultant Dr Gowtham Kuncha also gave presentations about Mechanical Thrombectomy in Acute Ischemic Stroke in SNVICON, Chennai and in TANS, Ooty.
Our postgraduates actively contribute to the field through their participation in national and international conferences, with notable achievements such as Dr. Kaveeze’s best platform presentation at the Neurological Society of India – Young Neurosurgeons Forum in Hyderabad and Dr. Shubha Dip Nandi’s second prize for the best research paper at the TANS 2024 conference. Collectively, our postgraduates presented 37 research papers during the past one year at various platforms out of which 4 were international conferences and 33 were national.
We are honored to receive the ET Excellence Award by The Times Group for “Pioneer in Management of Brain Tumors” in the South Tamil Nadu zone, recognizing our dedication to providing the highest quality of care to our patients.
Looking ahead, our vision is to continue our pursuit of excellence in cerebrovascular sciences and establish a center of excellence for epilepsy surgery. As we continue to push the boundaries of neurosurgical innovation and excellence, our commitment to advancing patient care remains unwavering, cementing our position as pioneers in the field of neurosurgery. As we reflect on the achievements of the past year, we are commitment to improving patient outcomes and shaping the future of neurosurgery.
